From summer freedom to winter survival: Understand every difference between My Summer Car and My Winter Car. Essential guide for MSC veterans wondering what changed in the winter sequel.
From the Steam Store Page: "BE WARNED: This game is for players who already master the challenge of My Summer Car. Definitely not recommended for any player not familiar with the original installment."
My Winter Car is explicitly designed as a harder sequel for MSC veterans. If you haven't played MSC, start there first โ MWC assumes you already understand the core mechanics and can handle extreme difficulty.
My Summer Car: "What if you could do anything in rural Finland with no consequences?"
My Winter Car: "What if every decision had consequences and you had to survive structured adult responsibilities?"
| Aspect | My Summer Car (โ๏ธ) | My Winter Car (โ๏ธ) |
|---|---|---|
| Time Period | Summer 1995 | January 1999 (3.5 years later) |
| Location | Alivieska, Rural Finland | Perรคjรคrvi Region, Same Area |
| Protagonist Age | 18-19 years old | ~22-23 years old (same character, grown up) |
| Living Situation | Parents' house (parents in Tenerife) | Own apartment in town + access to parents' house |
| Season & Weather | Bright summer days, warm temperatures | Dark winter, -40ยฐC to +2ยฐC, heavy snow |

| Story Continuity | Original story (fix dad's car, Suski romance) | Sequel story (details not fully revealed in EA) |
| Save Transfer | N/A | Can import MSC save (some items transfer, not money) |
Same protagonist, different chapter: You play the same character from MSC, now 3.5 years older and living independently. Developer Toplessgun confirmed MSC save imports can affect MWC's story, though details are limited in Early Access.
What transfers: Some items (CD player, marker lights if purchased in MSC appear on Sorbett in MWC). Money does NOT transfer.
| Aspect | MSC: Satsuma AMP (โ๏ธ) | MWC: Corris Rivett (โ๏ธ) |
|---|---|---|
| Real-World Basis | Datsun 100A (1970s) | Ford Taunus TC (1971-1976) |
| Starting Condition | Fully disassembled in garage (free) | Must purchase body for ~500mk from seller |
| Parts Count | ~200 parts | ~200 parts (almost identical complexity) |
| Engine Type | 1.4L inline-4 | 2.0L SOHC inline-4 (98hp @ 5500rpm) |
| Drive Type | Front-wheel drive | Rear-wheel drive |
| Transmission Options | 4-speed manual (default) | 4-speed manual, 5-speed manual, 3-speed auto (VIN dependent) |
| Rev Limiter | Has electronic rev limiter | NO rev limiter - can over-rev and destroy engine |
| VIN System | No VIN system | Full VIN system determines trim, options, build date |
| Trim Variants | Single configuration | Multiple trims (Base, L, SLX, GT) with different equipment |
| Parts Acquisition | Most parts lying around house/garage | Must buy ALL parts via catalog/Fleetari/classifieds |
| Build Cost | Minimal (~1,000-3,000mk for upgrades) | Extensive (~15,000-30,000mk+ estimated) |
| Historical Registration | Not available | Can register as historical vehicle if 30+ years old |
Major Change from Satsuma: The Corris Rivett has NO electronic rev limiter. If you over-rev the engine (especially during "money shifts" - accidental downshifts at high RPM), you will cause catastrophic engine damage.
This is particularly dangerous with tuned engines. MSC veterans used to bouncing off the rev limiter must break this habit immediately.
NEW in MWC: Can buy multiple copies of the same part. This enables spare parts, easier replacement, and provides ~20% better FPS during assembly.
In MSC, you could only have one of each part type at a time.
50-60% of parts can break in MWC vs lower percentage in MSC. Parts show visual wear states (scuff marks) and make sounds indicating when replacement is needed.
Suspension parts break easily on heavy hits if in bad condition.
Every Rivett has unique VIN determining factory spec: build location, trim level, engine, transmission, axle ratio, paint color, interior, optional equipment.
Check VIN plate before ordering parts to match your car's specification!
| Aspect | MSC: Blue Van (Hayosiko) (โ๏ธ) | MWC: Sorbett 1600 LTD (โ๏ธ) |
|---|---|---|
| Real-World Basis | Hayosiko van | Talbot 1510 |
| Condition | Working from start | Working from start |
| Maintenance | Can modify and repair | Limited maintenance (hood doesn't open in EA) |
| Heater System | Basic heater | Adjustable heater unit - critical for survival |
| Purpose | Utility vehicle, part hauling | Daily driver while building Rivett |
MSC: Survival was a background mechanic. Hunger and thirst were easily managed. Mistakes hurt but rarely ended runs.
MWC: Survival is relentless and unforgiving. Temperature, alcohol dependency, and time management are constant threats. You can freeze to death in 10-15 minutes without proper clothing.
| System | My Summer Car (โ๏ธ) | My Winter Car (โ๏ธ) |
|---|---|---|
| Hunger | Present, easily managed with food | Present, same basic system |
| Thirst | Standard thirst bar - drink water, milk, beer | REPLACED by "Problem Bar" (alcohol dependency) |
| Fatigue | Manage with sleep, coffee | Same system, but sleep requires warm room |
| Temperature | NOT a system - no temperature effects | NEW CRITICAL SYSTEM - freeze to death in 10-15 min |
| Clothing | Cosmetic only | Survival gear required - indoor vs outdoor clothing matters |
| Stress | Present, managed with sauna/swimming | Present (details vary in EA) |
| Urine | Present, use toilet/outdoor | Present (similar system) |
| Dirtiness | Present, shower/sauna to clean | Present (similar system) |
| Death Consequence | Respawn at home (or Permadeath mode) | Same (Permadeath available, now properly deletes saves) |
Most confusing mechanic: The Problem Bar has confused thousands of players who think it's thirst. It's NOT. Water barely helps. This is intentional โ your character is an alcoholic.
This design choice is controversial but deliberate. Developer Toplessgun stated this mechanic explores addiction themes in Finnish rural culture.

Snow/ice physics require different driving style vs summer roads.
Ice Track Jokkis Racing: Side-by-side on frozen lake (no prizes yet in EA)
Rally Sprint: Winter rally through snowy roads (being developed)
Start with My Summer Car. Master the core mechanics (car building, survival, controls) in a forgiving environment first.

95% Very Positive on Steam (4,084 reviews) - MWC is being well-received by MSC veterans who wanted exactly this: same gameplay, harsher stakes, winter setting.
Common praise: Atmosphere, temperature system, challenge level, same developer charm
Common complaints: Problem Bar confusion, Early Access bugs, some feel it's "MSC with snow" (not enough new features)
